Ekaterina Skliar and Aleksei Aleksandrov
https://www.skliar.org
Ekaterina Skliar is a Philadelphia-based mandolinist and domrist. She made her debut at age 11 with the Russian Folk Instrument Orchestra of the Buryatia Republic. Since then Ekaterina has performed with many chamber ensembles and orchestras and worked with renowned musicians.
In 2015 Ekaterina and her husband Aleksei Aleksandrov, who is a professional musician playing domra, have created an acoustic mandolin-domra duo. In just two years as a duo, Ekaterina and Aleksei have performed concerts in numerous Russian and American cities, where their performances got many positive reviews. Mark Linkins, Musical Director of Munier Mandolin and Guitar Orchestra, wrote about this project: “Both products of the M. Glinka Novosibirsk State Conservatory, Aleksandrov and Skliar enthrall audiences with their virtuosic skill and impeccable artistry. The combination of Skliar’s pure, crystalline tone (mandolin) and Aleksandrov’s warm, harp-like tone (domra) is magical.” Ekaterina and Aleksei present a repertoire that spans the globe; from Bach duets to Russian folk songs, and from Aleksei’s own compositions to neo folklore and jazz.
Bob Cohen
As a native of New York City, Bob Cohen began piano lessons at the age of four.
After 8 years of classical piano training, Bob heard pianist Art Tatum in a
live performance, and his musical interests quickly turned to jazz.
As a teenager, Bob listened to the early bop recordings and
began an intensive study of Charlie Parker’s music.
At 16, Bob had a once in a lifetime opportunity to play a gig with Charlie Parker in New York,
filling in for Al Haig, Parker’s regular pianist.
While still in college studying engineering, Bob took piano lessons
with legendary pianist Lennie Tristano in New York.
After receiving his M.S. degree in engineering, he worked on nuclear energy projects in Ohio & California. Bob came to Philadelphia in the mid-1960’s to work on various NASA space programs. At G.E. he was assigned project manager for the development of small nuclear power units that were placed on the moon by Apollo astronauts during five of the lunar landings. These units supplied electrical power for science experiment packages left on the moon and they powered the communications gear that transmitted the science data back to Earth.
Bob continued to pursue two concurrent career paths –
as an engineer and a jazz musician.
He also presided over a sound studio in Old City,
where many Philadelphia musicians recorded their first albums.
During the 1980’s, Bob’s jazz trio performed at a popular jazz club in Philadelphia (Café Borgia) where he was “resident pianist” for 12 years. He performed with some well-known jazz artists: Arnett Cobb, Bob Brookmeyer, bassist Mike Richmond, singers Rachelle Ferrell and the late Evelyn Simms, as well as many other fine Philly musicians including Larry McKenna, Sonny Troy, Lee Smith, Tyrone Brown, and John Swana.
The Planets
The Planets, an original rockin’ blues band , started out in the early 80’s with
Joel and Larry Planet playing the Philly music scene.
They released their first cd in 2012 and are planning to work on a bunch of new compositions at Rittenhouse in 2018. We have recently been playing with
Jim Hamilton and he will be joining us at this Soundworks event.

Rafael Pondé, an accomplished Philadelphia-based musician, originally from Salvador, in The State of Bahia, Brazil, promotes cultural understanding and combats racism through music. Early recognition began in 1999, when he participated in the Bahian Music Festival by University of Vitória da Conquista. Here he and The Curupira band won the blessing of Waly Salomão, one of the greatest “Tropicalia” poets. This led to Rafael being placed in the hall of the greats “novissimos baianos.” Waly traveled with the young Rafael to São Paulo to record the program “Música brasileira” in the studios of Trama, with João Marcelo Bôscoli, the son of the legendary Elis Regina.
Rafael has recorded six albums, and has toured Europe and Latin America, and played in The Weltkulture festival in Germany in 2010, among other important european festivals .In 2016, Rafael was elected as “Brazilian cultural ambassador” for the program “Partners of America” (Founded in 1964 by JFK) from the American department of State. After being coming to USA since 2014 with grants from Bahia government and Brazil´s federal government he is living now between Brazil and the city of Philadelphia. His workshops, concerts and speeches share Brazilian culture and focus on building cultural understanding and overcoming racism through music and the arts. More at www.rafaelponde.com.br
Singer-songwriter Cissa Paz has made a name for herself in Washington DC as an eclectic performer influenced by the local jazz sounds and her Brazilian African-Indigenous background. Nominated for 3 Wammies, her debut album gained great organic momentum. Cissa’s captivating stage presence and soulful voice bring music that is upbeat and engaging. She’s known and loved among the lovers and dancers of Brazilian music not only as a performer, but as an ambassador of her genre. Her upcoming album promises a combination of Afro-Brazilian base with funky and soulful influences. A musical melting pot of fresh collaborations with highly acclaimed artists from her home country.
Cissa’s self-titled album released in September, 2015 “is unexpectedly playful and whimsical in the nicest sense of the word, and we almost always end up falling in love with her on this…The bounding momentum of some of her sambas is uncompromising and she evokes the joie de vivre of much that is beautiful about being Brasilian.” (World Music Report).
Born in Belgium by chance, Cissa was raised mostly in Rio de Janeiro. She began her musical love affair by spending afternoons with the sounds of Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Elis Regina and other Brazilian greats coming from her parents’ record player. Her musical tastes matured as she kept sampling the musical diversity of the world. Her dance background is reflected on her music and is why most of her songs have a rhythmic sound that gets people on their feet. More at www.cissapaz.com
