Celebration of Black Love with Julie Rainbow at Historic Germantown

September 19, 2017 @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm
Free

Celebration of Black Love is an artistic tribute to the essence of black love, its endurance, devotion and resilience. Through music, film, poetry and storytelling, this multigenerational event will honor the many ways black history has borne witness to love at all costs.
Leeway Transformation Award winner (2016) Julie Rainbow was disturbed by the media’s focus on dysfunctional and broken relationships within the African American community.

As an artist and activist, she embarked on a journey to find and document the lives of ordinary people who weathered the storms of life and sustained healthy relationships. She interviewed hundreds of couples for her research, and twenty of the most compelling unions were featured in her first book, “Standing the Test of Time: Love Stories of African American Elders.” Celebration of Black Love will highlight selections from her work, alongside artists and creative contributors who will share their own unique expressions of “Black Love.”
