The Underground Railroad Quilt Code at Awbury Arboretum
The Underground Railroad Quilt Code Fact or Fiction-Is there Proof
Textile artist, historian, educator and expert story teller Sharon Tindall will take participants on a journey through African ancestry by exploring the natural, cultural, and social history of cotton.
Attendees will be introduced to patterns and codes woven into cloth from West Africa, and examine the evidence for the existence of an Underground Railroad Quilt Code.
This is a two-part even: The talk will start at l0am, and a hands-on quilting portion of the event will follow.
It’s free but registration is neccesary for the hands-on quilting activity.
The From Cotton to Quilts exhibition will be on display at Awbury Arboretum in the Cope House during the month of February.
