Our dramatic event, Liberty to Go to See, returns for its fifth year!
Based on the Chew Family Papers, the play features the interactions between the free, indentured, and enslaved workers and the Chew family from the 1760s to the 1860s. The title comes from a letter from an enslaved worker Joseph to his master, Benjamin Chew, requesting “liberty” to accept employment closer to his wife. The play contrasts the ideals of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness with the realities of racial discrimination, class divisions, and the struggle for freedom.
Liberty to Go to See
takes place in the Main House and is narrated by James Smith, a free African American servant.
Due to the nature of the play, audiences are limited to 20 people and is not recommended for children 12 years of age and younger.
Tickets are $15 and available for purchase through Eventbrite. For more information about our dramatic event, visit Liberty to Go to See.
Liberty to Go to See is funded by the African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund of the National Trust for Historic Preservation with support from the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation and The Haley Foundation.
