Film & Discussion: “Nightmare” at Uncle Bobbie’s Book Store and Cafe: criminal justice

December 19, 2017 @ 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm
Free

Uncle Bobbie’s has teamed up with Incarceration Nations Network for a screening and discussion of their new short film, “Nightmare,” created by Alex Pope. The six-minute film dives into the way incarceration disproportionately affects those in poverty. Lack of access to legal services, outdated legal frameworks, and the barriers of cash bail systems result in the de facto criminalization of poverty.

After the film screening, we’ll hold a panel discussion with Baz Dreisinger (Professor, John Jay College of Criminal Justice; Founding Academic Director, Prison-to-College Pipeline; Director, Incarceration Nations Network), Marc Lamont Hill (Uncle Bobbie’s owner; journalist, author, activist; Professor of Media Studies and Urban Education, Temple University), and Bill Cobb (Deputy Director, Campaign for Smart Justice, ACLU National)—followed by a community discussion with additional participants from Black Lives Matter – Philadelphia, The Center for Returning Citizens, Frontline Dads, Inc., the No215Jail Coalition, and the Philadelphia Community Bail Fund.
