About Kurt Rosenwinkel

Born in Philadelphia on October 28, 1970, Kurt Rosenwinkel attended the Berklee College of Music for two and a half years before leaving in his junior year to tour with the legendary vibraphonist-composer-educator Gary Burton, the dean of the school at the time. Subsequently, Rosenwinkel moved to Brooklyn, where he continued to develop his skills performing with the groups Human Feel, Paul Motian’s Electric Bebop Band, the Joe Henderson group and the Brian Blade Fellowship. In 1995, Rosenwinkel won the Composer’s Award from the National Endowment for the Arts. He subsequently released 1996’s East Coast Love Affair on the Fresh Sound New Talent label and 1998’s Intuit on Criss Cross before being signed to Verve Records, debuting with 2000’s The Enemies of Energy.

He made a major breakthrough with 2003’s Heartcore, produced by rapper Q-Tip of A Tribe Called Quest, and followed in 2005 with Deep Song, featuring colleagues Brad Mehldau on piano, Joshua Redman on tenor saxophone, Larry Grenadier on bass and Jeff Ballard on drums. His 2008 debut on Word of Mouth Music, The Remedy, was a 2-CD set recorded live at the Village Vanguard with tenor saxophonist Mark Turner, pianist Aaron Goldberg, bassist Joe Martin and drummer Eric Harland. His subsequent releases on the independent WOM Music label include 2009’s trio album Reflections, with bassist Eric Revis and drummer Eric Harland, 2012’s Our Secret World, with the 18-piece Orchestra de Jazz Matosinhos (OJM) from Porto, Portugal, and 2012’s Star of Jupiter, a quartet project featuring pianist Aaron Parks, bassist Eric Revis and drummer Justin Faulkner.

Now comes Caipi, which stands as Rosenwinkel’s most personal and fully realized outing to date. “A kind of transformation is taking place,” he says of his new musical direction. “It’s been a sort of a rebirth for me this year in many ways. I retired from the school where I taught for nine years (Jazz Institute Berlin), I began to manage myself, I started a record company Heartcore records, and now I’m so happy to be putting this music out. I think this record really represents the balance, for me, of song and singing, playing and soloing.”
