SUMMARY:Author event: Layla F. Saad\, "Me and White Supremacy"
DESCRIPTION:Uncle Bobbie’s is proud to welcome author/educator Layla F. Saad! This event will take place at FUMCOG\, a short walk up from our store at Germantown & High Sts. \nWhen Layla Saad began an Instagram challenge called #meandwhitesupremacy\, she never predicted it would become a cultural movement. She encouraged people to own up and share their racist behaviors\, big and small. She was looking for truth\, and she got it… \nThousands of people participated in the challenge\, and over 95\,000 people downloaded the supporting work The Me and White Supremacy Workbook. \nUpdated and expanded from the original edition\, Me and White Supremacy teaches readers how to dismantle the privilege within themselves so that they can stop (often unconsciously) inflicting damage on people of color\, and in turn\, help other white people do better\, too.\nLAYLA F SAAD is the author of the ground-breaking Me And White Supremacy and the host of Good Ancestor Podcast. She is a globally sought speaker on the topics of race\, spirituality\, feminism and leadership. Layla’s work is driven by her powerful desire to become a ‘good ancestor’; to live and work in ways that leave a legacy of healing and liberation for those who will come after she is gone. \nAudience Q&A to follow a moderated discussion with the author. SIGNED BOOKS will be available for purchase at this event.

SUMMARY:Karyn Olivier solo show at ICA-Opening
DESCRIPTION:January 24—May 10\, 2020 \nThis exhibition offers the rare opportunity to examine the recent trajectories of Philadelphia-based artist Karyn Olivier’s investigation into scale and its relation to issues of inclusivity and acceptance. \nThe exhibition builds on several public projects and commissions created by the artist in recent years and continues to revise\, rework\, and expand on key works that examine the role of monuments and their relationship to civic space\, representations of conflicts within history\, and the ephemeral nature of collective gestures. \nWorks in this exhibition bring together two themes the artist has focused on in recent years: larger-than-life scale and the minute effluvia of individuals’ lives. A fully-functioning carousel for only one rider\, a large car made entirely of discarded shoes\, and a brick wall built using clothing wedged between the bricks as mortar\, which evokes memories of laundry sites Olivier visited in Trinidad and carries overtones of refugee structures and traces of bodies\, are among the works selected to be reimagined at ICA. \nICA is producing a catalog of the exhibition that will serve as the first overview monograph of the artist. The exhibition is organized by Daniel and Brett Sundheim Chief Curator Anthony Elms.

SUMMARY:Author Event at Uncle Bobbies: Chloe Hilliard
DESCRIPTION:Uncle Bobbie’s welcomes author & comedian Chloe Hilliard for a discussion & signing of her new book\, “F*ck Your Diet: And Other Things My Thighs Tell Me.” Books will be available for purchase. \nAbout The Book:\nFans of Issa Rae and Phoebe Robinson will love this collection of laugh-out-loud funny and insightful essays that explore race\, feminism\, pop culture\, and how society reinforces the message that we are nothing without the perfect body. \nBy the time Chloé Hilliard was 12\, she wore a size 12—both shoe and dress—and stood over six feet tall. Fitting in was never an option. That didn’t stop her from trying. Cursed with a “slow metabolism\,” “baby weight\,” and “big bones\,”—the fat trilogy—Chloe turned to fad diets\, starvation\, pills\, and workouts\, all of which failed. \nRealizing that everything—from government policies to corporate capitalism—directly impacts our relationship with food and our waistlines\, Chloé changed her outlook on herself and hopes others will do the same for themselves. \nThe perfect mix of cultural commentary\, conspiracies\, and confessions\, F*ck Your Diet pokes fun at the all too familiar\, misguided quest for better health\, permanent weight loss\, and a sense of self-worth. \nAbout The Author:\nChloé Hilliard is a writer and comedian who first appeared as a semi-finalist on NBC’s Last Comic Standing and went on to appear on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon\, Comedy Central\, MTV\, VH1\, and more. Prior to her comedy career\, she was a culture and entertainment journalist whose work has been featured in The Village Voice\, Essence\, Vibe\, and The Source. Find out more at ChloeHilliard.com.

SUMMARY:Author Event: Kiley Reid at Uncle Bobbies
DESCRIPTION:Author Event: Kiley Reid\n\n2020 Mon Jan 6th 7:00pm – 8:30pm\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nUncle Bobbies Welcomes author Kiley Reid for her debut book “Such a Fun Age” \nAbout the book: \nAlix Chamberlain is a woman who gets what she wants and has made a living\, with her confidence-driven brand\, showing other women how to do the same. So she is shocked when her babysitter\, Emira Tucker\, is confronted while watching the Chamberlains’ toddler one night\, walking the aisles of their local high-end supermarket. The store’s security guard\, seeing a young black woman out late with a white child\, accuses Emira of kidnapping two-year-old Briar. A small crowd gathers\, a bystander films everything\, and Emira is furious and humiliated. Alix resolves to make things right. \nBut Emira herself is aimless\, broke\, and wary of Alix’s desire to help. At twenty-five\, she is about to lose her health insurance and has no idea what to do with her life. When the video of Emira unearths someone from Alix’s past\, both women find themselves on a crash course that will upend everything they think they know about themselves\, and each other. \nWith empathy and piercing social commentary\, Such a Fun Age explores the stickiness of transactional relationships\, what it means to make someone “family\,” the complicated reality of being a grown up\, and the consequences of doing the right thing for the wrong reason.

SUMMARY:Author Event: Ruha Benjamin
DESCRIPTION:Author Event: Ruha Benjamin\n\nSun Dec 8th 5:00pm – 7:00pm\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nUncle Bobbie’s welcomes Professor and Author Ruha Benjamin for an author talk for her book “Race After Technology: Abolitionist Tools for the New Jim Code”. This discussion will be moderated by Professor Dorothy E. Roberts. \nAbout the book:\nFrom everyday apps to complex algorithms\, Ruha Benjamin cuts through tech-industry hype to understand how emerging technologies can reinforce White supremacy and deepen social inequity. \nBenjamin argues that automation\, far from being a sinister story of racist programmers scheming on the dark web\, has the potential to hide\, speed up\, and deepen discrimination while appearing neutral and even benevolent when compared to the racism of a previous era. Presenting the concept of the “New Jim Code\,” she shows how a range of discriminatory designs encode inequity by explicitly amplifying racial hierarchies; by ignoring but thereby replicating social divisions; or by aiming to fix racial bias but ultimately doing quite the opposite. Moreover\, she makes a compelling case for race itself as a kind of technology\, designed to stratify and sanctify social injustice in the architecture of everyday life. \nThis illuminating guide provides conceptual tools for decoding tech promises with sociologically informed skepticism. In doing so\, it challenges us to question not only the technologies we are sold but also the ones we ourselves manufacture.

SUMMARY:Author event: Michael Eric Dyson "Jay-Z:Made in America"
DESCRIPTION:Uncle Bobbie’s Welcomes Author Michael Eric Dyson for an author talk on his new book “JAY-Z: Made in America”. The discussion will be moderated by Marc Lamont Hill. \nAbout the Book: JAY-Z: Made in America is the fruit of Michael Eric Dyson’s decade of teaching the work of one of the greatest poets this nation has produced\, as gifted a wordsmith as Walt Whitman\, Robert Frost and Rita Dove. But as a rapper\, he’s sometimes not given the credit he deserves for just how great an artist he’s been for so long. \nThis book wrestles with the biggest themes of JAY-Z’s career\, including hustling\, and it recognizes the way that he’s always weaved politics into his music\, making important statements about race\, criminal justice\, black wealth and social injustice. As he enters his fifties\, and to mark his thirty years as a recording artist\, this is the perfect time to take a look at JAY-Z’s career and his role in making this nation what it is today.
