SUMMARY:Muhsana Ali presents Portes et Passages du Retour\, her life journey from Philadelphia to Africa
DESCRIPTION:  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPortes et Passages du Retour is a Center for Art and Holistic Development in rural Senegal which was founded by the artist couple\, Philadelphia-born\, Muhsana Ali and Senegal-born\, Amadou Kane Sy. The couple is presently in residence at October Gallery after a three month production period at the University of Pennsylvania’s Penn Museum\, during which time they produced a permanent sculptural installation for the newly redesigned Africa Galleries\, which opened in November.\n\nPortes et Passages is sponsoring a dynamic program at the October Gallery for the month of February\, Black History Month. We have no intention to limit ourselves to the shortest month – It is our goal that February will kick off a full year of continued events on the theme of Black History …and future.\n\n\nSaturday\, February 8\, 2020\nMuhsana Ali presents Portes et Passages du Retour\, her life journey from Philadelphia to Africa. She will be interviewed by Valerie Anderson.\n\nMuhsana Ali was born in Philadelphia\, PA and currently lives in Senegal\, West Africa. She holds a BFA degree and an MA in Art Education. Muhsana is a multi-talented artist who is skilled in painting\, drawing and printmaking\, but whose work covers a broad spectrum of mediums ranging from videography\, photography\, sculptural installation as well as large-scale murals and mosaics. Muhsana’s work is defined by her interest in the holistic evolution of human consciousness. She is concerned with injustice and oppression and how these can be transformed into higher forms of social interactions through art. Muhsana’s work has been primarily community-centered since her 1999 two-year exhibition project\, Portes et Passages du Retour\, which took place in an abandoned building assisted by a gang of homeless teens in Abidjan\, Côte d’Ivoire. Her vision grew in 2004 when\, accompanied by artist Amadou Kane Sy\, she co-founded a rural Center for Art and Holistic Development through their Senegal-based association\, Portes et Passage du Retour. Muhsana’s work has been exhibited internationally and her community-driven projects have been conducted throughout the U.S. and Africa both individually as well as in collaboration with artist\, Amadou Kane Sy. Muhsana is a recipient of numerous awards and honors including a Fulbright Fellowship and a Pew Fellowship in the Arts.\n\nValerie Anderson is a group facilitator\, arts advocate\, and social justice educator. She facilitates workshops that utilizes the arts to generate discussion\, heal trauma\, share identity\, and bring about social change.\nSince 2008 she is volunteer docent (tour guide) at the African American Museum in Philadelphia which allows her to increase her knowledge in black history\, art\, and culture. In 2014 she became the lead docent for the Church of the Advocate and its 14 black history murals that parallels the Bible and the black experience.\nShe has over 25 years as a Masters level social worker and her group facilitation skills include working with women\, children\, and families on a variety of topics and in a variety of settings.\nShe is a member of Green Street Friends Monthly Meeting since 2010 and in September 2019 became a Board Member of the Green Street Friends School.\n\nAdmission Free.\nOctober Gallery 6353 Greene Street Philadelphia\, PA 19144.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPortes et Passages\nSaturday\, February 8\, 2020 2 to 5 PM.\nOctober Gallery 6353 Greene Street Philadelphia\, PA 19144.\n\n\nFree Posters\, Books and Artful items for all who attend.\nAdmission Free.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Reception:Barbara Bullock in Africa in the Arts of Philadelphia Exhibit at the Woodmere
DESCRIPTION:Africa in the Arts of Philadelphia: Bullock\, Searles\, and Twins Seven-Seven\n02/08/2020-\n05/17/2020\n\nSusanna W. Gold\, Ph.D.\, Guest Curator\nAfrica in the Arts of Philadelphia brings together the work of visual artists Barbara Bullock (born 1938)\, Charles Searles (1937–2004)\, and Twins Seven-Seven (1944–2011)\, exploring their collaborative cross-fertilization of ideas and assertions of African and African American cultural identity. These artists participated in the activities of the Ile-Ife Black Humanitarian Center in North Philadelphia. Conceived and established in 1969 by dancer and choreographer Arthur Hall (1934–2000)\, Ile-Ife offered visual arts\, performance\, and musical arts classes and programs for the Philadelphia community. The center’s goals focused on educating audiences in traditional African culture and aesthetics and infusing African and African-inspired art forms into contemporary Philadelphia experience. \nIle-Ife derives its name from the ancient Yoruba city of Ife\, held to be the site of the world’s creation\, according to Yoruba mythology. Ile-Ife was Philadelphia’s primary conduit for sharing and celebrating the great traditions of Africa in building community through a shared sense of strength and pride. Bullock and Searles formed Ile-Ife’s art department\, while Twins Seven-Seven introduced authentic Yoruba culture and aesthetics into its activities. Africa in the Arts of Philadelphia examines the work of these artists and their formative experiences at Ile-Ife\, which expanded their understanding of the richness of African traditions. \nExhibition-related Events\n02.08.2020 | Open House Reception | 2-4pm\n02.22| Lecture: Prince Twins Seven-Seven\, Life and Art | 3pm\n03.07 | In Conversation: Susanna W. SUMMARY:Author Event: John Sayles & Yellow Earth at Uncle Bobbies
DESCRIPTION:Rich layers of shale oil are discovered under Yellow Earth\, North Dakota and the neighboring Three Nations Indian reservation. All hell breaks loose. \nIn Yellow Earth\, the site of Three Nations reservations on the banks of the Missouri River in North Dakota\, Sayles introduces us to Harleigh Killdeer\, chairman of the Tribal Business Council. “An activist in his way\, a product of the Casino Era\,” Kildeer\, who is contracted by oil firm Case and Crosby\, spearheads the new Three Nations Petroleum Company. \nWhat follows\, with characteristic lyrical dexterity\, insight\, and wit\, introduces us to a memorable cast of characters\, weaving together narratives of competing worlds through masterful storytelling. \nSet shortly before Standing Rock would become a symbol of historic proportions of the brutal confrontation between native resistance and the forces of big business and law enforcement\, the fate of Yellow Earth serves as a parable for our times. \nBooks will be available for purchase. Signing will follow the discussion.

DESCRIPTION:Location: At Founders Hall located at the intersection of Olney Ave and Wister Ave directly across from Fresh Grocer. The building has lots of glass. And you can park in fresh grocer lot or on street. \nPushout: The Criminalization of Black Girls in Schools is a feature length documentary that takes a deep dive into the lives of Black girls and the practices\, cultural beliefs and policies that disrupts one of the most important factors in girls’ lives – education. \nBlack girls are over-represented along the entire exclusionary school discipline\, including\, but not limited to\, suspension\, expulsion\, referrals to law enforcement and arrest. Across the nation\, girls of color have described experiencing discipline in response to their expressions\, presentation\, and/or identity\, instead of in response to an actual threat to school safety. \nhttps://pushoutfilm.com/

SUMMARY:Author event: Layla F. Saad\, "Me and White Supremacy"
DESCRIPTION:Uncle Bobbie’s is proud to welcome author/educator Layla F. Saad! This event will take place at FUMCOG\, a short walk up from our store at Germantown & High Sts. \nWhen Layla Saad began an Instagram challenge called #meandwhitesupremacy\, she never predicted it would become a cultural movement. She encouraged people to own up and share their racist behaviors\, big and small. She was looking for truth\, and she got it… \nThousands of people participated in the challenge\, and over 95\,000 people downloaded the supporting work The Me and White Supremacy Workbook. \nUpdated and expanded from the original edition\, Me and White Supremacy teaches readers how to dismantle the privilege within themselves so that they can stop (often unconsciously) inflicting damage on people of color\, and in turn\, help other white people do better\, too.\nLAYLA F SAAD is the author of the ground-breaking Me And White Supremacy and the host of Good Ancestor Podcast. She is a globally sought speaker on the topics of race\, spirituality\, feminism and leadership. Layla’s work is driven by her powerful desire to become a ‘good ancestor’; to live and work in ways that leave a legacy of healing and liberation for those who will come after she is gone. \nAudience Q&A to follow a moderated discussion with the author. SIGNED BOOKS will be available for purchase at this event.

SUMMARY:Karyn Olivier solo show at ICA-Opening
DESCRIPTION:January 24—May 10\, 2020 \nThis exhibition offers the rare opportunity to examine the recent trajectories of Philadelphia-based artist Karyn Olivier’s investigation into scale and its relation to issues of inclusivity and acceptance. \nThe exhibition builds on several public projects and commissions created by the artist in recent years and continues to revise\, rework\, and expand on key works that examine the role of monuments and their relationship to civic space\, representations of conflicts within history\, and the ephemeral nature of collective gestures. \nWorks in this exhibition bring together two themes the artist has focused on in recent years: larger-than-life scale and the minute effluvia of individuals’ lives. A fully-functioning carousel for only one rider\, a large car made entirely of discarded shoes\, and a brick wall built using clothing wedged between the bricks as mortar\, which evokes memories of laundry sites Olivier visited in Trinidad and carries overtones of refugee structures and traces of bodies\, are among the works selected to be reimagined at ICA. \nICA is producing a catalog of the exhibition that will serve as the first overview monograph of the artist. The exhibition is organized by Daniel and Brett Sundheim Chief Curator Anthony Elms.

SUMMARY:Author Event at Uncle Bobbies: Chloe Hilliard
DESCRIPTION:Uncle Bobbie’s welcomes author & comedian Chloe Hilliard for a discussion & signing of her new book\, “F*ck Your Diet: And Other Things My Thighs Tell Me.” Books will be available for purchase. \nAbout The Book:\nFans of Issa Rae and Phoebe Robinson will love this collection of laugh-out-loud funny and insightful essays that explore race\, feminism\, pop culture\, and how society reinforces the message that we are nothing without the perfect body. \nBy the time Chloé Hilliard was 12\, she wore a size 12—both shoe and dress—and stood over six feet tall. Fitting in was never an option. That didn’t stop her from trying. Cursed with a “slow metabolism\,” “baby weight\,” and “big bones\,”—the fat trilogy—Chloe turned to fad diets\, starvation\, pills\, and workouts\, all of which failed. \nRealizing that everything—from government policies to corporate capitalism—directly impacts our relationship with food and our waistlines\, Chloé changed her outlook on herself and hopes others will do the same for themselves. \nThe perfect mix of cultural commentary\, conspiracies\, and confessions\, F*ck Your Diet pokes fun at the all too familiar\, misguided quest for better health\, permanent weight loss\, and a sense of self-worth. \nAbout The Author:\nChloé Hilliard is a writer and comedian who first appeared as a semi-finalist on NBC’s Last Comic Standing and went on to appear on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon\, Comedy Central\, MTV\, VH1\, and more. Prior to her comedy career\, she was a culture and entertainment journalist whose work has been featured in The Village Voice\, Essence\, Vibe\, and The Source. Find out more at ChloeHilliard.com.

SUMMARY:Author Event: Kiley Reid at Uncle Bobbies
DESCRIPTION:Author Event: Kiley Reid\n\n2020 Mon Jan 6th 7:00pm – 8:30pm\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nUncle Bobbies Welcomes author Kiley Reid for her debut book “Such a Fun Age” \nAbout the book: \nAlix Chamberlain is a woman who gets what she wants and has made a living\, with her confidence-driven brand\, showing other women how to do the same. So she is shocked when her babysitter\, Emira Tucker\, is confronted while watching the Chamberlains’ toddler one night\, walking the aisles of their local high-end supermarket. The store’s security guard\, seeing a young black woman out late with a white child\, accuses Emira of kidnapping two-year-old Briar. A small crowd gathers\, a bystander films everything\, and Emira is furious and humiliated. Alix resolves to make things right. \nBut Emira herself is aimless\, broke\, and wary of Alix’s desire to help. At twenty-five\, she is about to lose her health insurance and has no idea what to do with her life. When the video of Emira unearths someone from Alix’s past\, both women find themselves on a crash course that will upend everything they think they know about themselves\, and each other. \nWith empathy and piercing social commentary\, Such a Fun Age explores the stickiness of transactional relationships\, what it means to make someone “family\,” the complicated reality of being a grown up\, and the consequences of doing the right thing for the wrong reason.

SUMMARY:Author Event: Ruha Benjamin
DESCRIPTION:Author Event: Ruha Benjamin\n\nSun Dec 8th 5:00pm – 7:00pm\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nUncle Bobbie’s welcomes Professor and Author Ruha Benjamin for an author talk for her book “Race After Technology: Abolitionist Tools for the New Jim Code”. This discussion will be moderated by Professor Dorothy E. Roberts. \nAbout the book:\nFrom everyday apps to complex algorithms\, Ruha Benjamin cuts through tech-industry hype to understand how emerging technologies can reinforce White supremacy and deepen social inequity. \nBenjamin argues that automation\, far from being a sinister story of racist programmers scheming on the dark web\, has the potential to hide\, speed up\, and deepen discrimination while appearing neutral and even benevolent when compared to the racism of a previous era. Presenting the concept of the “New Jim Code\,” she shows how a range of discriminatory designs encode inequity by explicitly amplifying racial hierarchies; by ignoring but thereby replicating social divisions; or by aiming to fix racial bias but ultimately doing quite the opposite. Moreover\, she makes a compelling case for race itself as a kind of technology\, designed to stratify and sanctify social injustice in the architecture of everyday life. \nThis illuminating guide provides conceptual tools for decoding tech promises with sociologically informed skepticism. In doing so\, it challenges us to question not only the technologies we are sold but also the ones we ourselves manufacture.
