She holds the importance of storytelling as paramount and strives to write music that is intelligent\, approachable\, and empathetic. Huynh received her B.M. in Jazz Studies\, Vocal Performance from Temple University’s Honors College. She was initially accepted as a classical piano major but found herself more involved in and drawn to jazz. She had the privilege to study under noted jazz vocalist Sachal Vasandani and later\, Sara Serpa. In 2019\, Huynh was accepted to participate in the prestigious Banff Centre Jazz and Creative Music Program\, led by Vijay Iyer and Tyshawn Sorrey. \nBorn out of her frustration from being a 20-something\, naturally\, she started a band. For better or worse\, MỸ TÂM (pronounced “mee-thum”) is an indie pop band that combines jazz with new wave sensibilities. Each composition strives to reflect on the challenges of being a young woman and explores how to face these challenges with dignity. Neil attended the New School in New York City on scholarship and studied with jazz greats\, Reggie Workman\, Jackie Byard\, Joe Chambers\, Gary Dial\, Arnie Lawrence\, Barry Harris and Jr. Mance. In 2005\, he released his debut album\, Revolutions\, voted as a listeners’ favorite on WRTI in Philadelphia. In 2012\, he released Nine Times One Hundred Thousand. In the spring 2020\, will release a new collaboration with Chad Taylor and Brian Settles on Cuneiform Records titled with the Chad Taylor Trio. DESCRIPTION:  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPortes et Passages du Retour is a Center for Art and Holistic Development in rural Senegal which was founded by the artist couple\, Philadelphia-born\, Muhsana Ali and Senegal-born\, Amadou Kane Sy. The couple is presently in residence at October Gallery after a three month production period at the University of Pennsylvania’s Penn Museum\, during which time they produced a permanent sculptural installation for the newly redesigned Africa Galleries\, which opened in November.\n\nPortes et Passages is sponsoring a dynamic program at the October Gallery for the month of February\, Black History Month. We have no intention to limit ourselves to the shortest month – It is our goal that February will kick off a full year of continued events on the theme of Black History …and future.\n\n\nSaturday\, February 8\, 2020\nMuhsana Ali presents Portes et Passages du Retour\, her life journey from Philadelphia to Africa. She will be interviewed by Valerie Anderson.\n\nMuhsana Ali was born in Philadelphia\, PA and currently lives in Senegal\, West Africa. She holds a BFA degree and an MA in Art Education. Muhsana is a multi-talented artist who is skilled in painting\, drawing and printmaking\, but whose work covers a broad spectrum of mediums ranging from videography\, photography\, sculptural installation as well as large-scale murals and mosaics. Muhsana’s work is defined by her interest in the holistic evolution of human consciousness. She is concerned with injustice and oppression and how these can be transformed into higher forms of social interactions through art. Muhsana’s work has been primarily community-centered since her 1999 two-year exhibition project\, Portes et Passages du Retour\, which took place in an abandoned building assisted by a gang of homeless teens in Abidjan\, Côte d’Ivoire. Her vision grew in 2004 when\, accompanied by artist Amadou Kane Sy\, she co-founded a rural Center for Art and Holistic Development through their Senegal-based association\, Portes et Passage du Retour. Muhsana’s work has been exhibited internationally and her community-driven projects have been conducted throughout the U.S. and Africa both individually as well as in collaboration with artist\, Amadou Kane Sy. Muhsana is a recipient of numerous awards and honors including a Fulbright Fellowship and a Pew Fellowship in the Arts.\n\nValerie Anderson is a group facilitator\, arts advocate\, and social justice educator. She facilitates workshops that utilizes the arts to generate discussion\, heal trauma\, share identity\, and bring about social change.\nSince 2008 she is volunteer docent (tour guide) at the African American Museum in Philadelphia which allows her to increase her knowledge in black history\, art\, and culture. DESCRIPTION:Africa in the Arts of Philadelphia: Bullock\, Searles\, and Twins Seven-Seven\n02/08/2020-\n05/17/2020\n\nSusanna W. Gold\, Ph.D.\, Guest Curator\nAfrica in the Arts of Philadelphia brings together the work of visual artists Barbara Bullock (born 1938)\, Charles Searles (1937–2004)\, and Twins Seven-Seven (1944–2011)\, exploring their collaborative cross-fertilization of ideas and assertions of African and African American cultural identity. These artists participated in the activities of the Ile-Ife Black Humanitarian Center in North Philadelphia. Conceived and established in 1969 by dancer and choreographer Arthur Hall (1934–2000)\, Ile-Ife offered visual arts\, performance\, and musical arts classes and programs for the Philadelphia community. The center’s goals focused on educating audiences in traditional African culture and aesthetics and infusing African and African-inspired art forms into contemporary Philadelphia experience. \nIle-Ife derives its name from the ancient Yoruba city of Ife\, held to be the site of the world’s creation\, according to Yoruba mythology. Ile-Ife was Philadelphia’s primary conduit for sharing and celebrating the great traditions of Africa in building community through a shared sense of strength and pride. Bullock and Searles formed Ile-Ife’s art department\, while Twins Seven-Seven introduced authentic Yoruba culture and aesthetics into its activities. DESCRIPTION:January 24—May 10\, 2020 \nThis exhibition offers the rare opportunity to examine the recent trajectories of Philadelphia-based artist Karyn Olivier’s investigation into scale and its relation to issues of inclusivity and acceptance. \nThe exhibition builds on several public projects and commissions created by the artist in recent years and continues to revise\, rework\, and expand on key works that examine the role of monuments and their relationship to civic space\, representations of conflicts within history\, and the ephemeral nature of collective gestures. \nWorks in this exhibition bring together two themes the artist has focused on in recent years: larger-than-life scale and the minute effluvia of individuals’ lives. A fully-functioning carousel for only one rider\, a large car made entirely of discarded shoes\, and a brick wall built using clothing wedged between the bricks as mortar\, which evokes memories of laundry sites Olivier visited in Trinidad and carries overtones of refugee structures and traces of bodies\, are among the works selected to be reimagined at ICA. \nICA is producing a catalog of the exhibition that will serve as the first overview monograph of the artist. The exhibition is organized by Daniel and Brett Sundheim Chief Curator Anthony Elms.

So she is shocked when her babysitter\, Emira Tucker\, is confronted while watching the Chamberlains’ toddler one night\, walking the aisles of their local high-end supermarket. The store’s security guard\, seeing a young black woman out late with a white child\, accuses Emira of kidnapping two-year-old Briar. A small crowd gathers\, a bystander films everything\, and Emira is furious and humiliated.
