SUMMARY:PRISM QUARTET : Mending Wall

Merion Ave. | Bryn Mawr\, PA \nCo-Presented by\nRoulette and PRISM Quartet\, Inc.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSoprano Tony Arnold\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis March\, the PRISM Quartet celebrates its 35th anniversary season with Mending Wall\, arguably its most ambitious project. \nNamed after the 1914 poem by Robert Frost\, Mending Wall is a fully staged concert exploring the meaning of walls in our world by giving musical form to questions about identity\, community\, division\, and freedom. Soprano Tony Arnold and pianist Arturo O’Farrill join the PRISM Quartet in world premiere performances of works by four visionary composers—Martin Bresnick\, George Lewis\, Juri Seo\, and O’Farrill—who take inspiration from poetry by Frost\, Keorapetse Kgositsile\, Waly Salomão\, and Guillermo Gómez-Peña. Mending Wall is directed by Jorinde Keesmaat with lighting design by Aaron Copp. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nStage Director Jorinde Keesmaat and Lighting Designer Aaron Copp\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Walls are a foundational part of our world: they have mythical and poetic resonance\, but also material consequences\,” noted Matthew Levy\, executive and co-artistic director of the PRISM Quartet. “The project began as a response to the idea of a wall as a dehumanizing force. Although America’s current zeal for wall-building has counterparts throughout history and across the globe\, it represents a specific failure of imagination. As artists\, we’re called to build another kind of structure: a collaborative experiment that restores mystery\, complexity\, and generosity to our encounters with one another. Mending Wall amplifies a range of musical and poetic voices; Our hope is that the project will illuminate and help us to confront and mend fractures in our human community.”\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nComposers George Lewis\, Arturo O’Farrill\, Juri Seo\, and Martin Bresnick\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMartin Bresnick’s commission\, Mending Time\, is inspired by the contradictions in Frost’s poem “Mending Wall\,” in which two neighbors meet yearly to rebuild the structure separating their farms. Bresnick writes\, “According to Frost we are trapped and doomed by fences to eternal contact and inevitable alienation. But what if the walls between us were made of music?” \nIn Where Her Eye Sits\, George Lewis set texts examining the legacy of Apartheid by the late South African poet and activist Keorapetse Kgositsile. The piece joins PRISM and soprano Tony Arnold “to link a coloratura’s sonic sensibility with the saxophone’s evocation of South African popular music via mbube-like orchestration.” \nJuri Seo‘s work\, Unsung Lullaby\, is inspired by Algaravi: Echo Chamber\, a volume of poetry by Syrian-Brazilian writer Waly Salomão that explores the dual meaning of “echo chamber”— the figurative connotation that’s ubiquitous in our politics/media\, and its older (and literal) meaning\, a walled space that repeats\, amplifies\, and distorts sounds. \nArturo O’Farrill’s Something to declare? (yeah\, fuck your wall) is based on “Freefalling Toward a Borderless Future” by Guillermo Gomez Peña and son jarocho\, a Mexican song form with a lead trovador voice supported by jaranas (guitar-like instruments)\, which PRISM’s saxophones approximate. His piece draws upon the rich political/cultural underpinnings of Fandango Fronterizo\, an annual festival on both sides of the San Diego/Tijuana border fence. \nWe invite you to visit the Mending Wall Website to learn more about the project. The site includes artist statements from our stage director and composers\, information about Mending Wall poets\, a project blog\, ticketing links\, and much more.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVisit the Mending Wall Website For Tickets/Info\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPRISM Quartet\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPhoto by Ara Howrani\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHailed by Chamber Music magazine for “pioneering achievements of the highest order\,” the PRISM Quartet has performed in Carnegie Hall on the Making Music Series\, in Alice Tully Hall with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center\, and throughout Latin America\, China\, and Russia under the auspices of the United States Information Agency and USArtists International. PRISM has also been presented to critical acclaim as soloists with the Detroit Symphony and Cleveland Orchestra\, and conducted residencies at the nation’s leading conservatories\, including the Curtis Institute of Music and the Oberlin Conservatory. Two-time recipients of the Chamber Music America/ASCAP Award for Adventurous Programming\, PRISM has commissioned nearly 300 works\, many by internationally celebrated composers\, including Pulitzer Prize-winners Julia Wolfe\, William Bolcom\, Jennifer Higdon\, Zhou Long\, and Bernard Rands;  MacArthur “Genius” Award recipients Tyshawn Sorey\, Bright Sheng\, and Miguel Zenón; and United States Artists Fellow Susie Ibarra. PRISM’s discography includes releases on Albany\, ECM\, innova\, Koch\, Naxos\, BMOP/Sound\, New Dynamic\, New Focus\, and its own label\, XAS Records. The Fifth Century\, PRISM’s ECM recording with The Crossing under Donald Nally\, was awarded a 2018 Grammy for Best Choral Performance. In 2016\, PRISM was named by its alma mater\, the University of Michigan\, as the first recipient of the Christopher Kendall Award in recognition of its work in “collaboration\, entrepreneurship\, and community engagement.” The PRISM Quartet plays Selmer saxophones and mouthpieces exclusively. PRISM Quartet members are Timothy McAllister\, Zachary Shemon\, Matthew Levy\, and Taimur Sullivan.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Author Linda Sarsour\, "We Are Not Here To Be Bystanders" at Uncle Bobbies
DESCRIPTION:Uncle Bobbie’s welcomes Linda Sarsour\, co-organizer of the Women’s March\, in sharing how growing up Palestinian Muslim American\, feminist\, and empowered moved her to become a globally recognized activist on behalf of marginalized communities across the country. In conversation with Marc Lamont Hill. \nOn a chilly spring morning in Brooklyn\, nineteen-year-old Linda Sarsour stared at her reflection\, dressed in a hijab for the first time. She saw in the mirror the woman she was growing to be—a young Muslim American woman unapologetic in her faith and her activism\, who would discover her innate sense of justice in the aftermath of 9/11. Now heralded for her award-winning leadership of the Women’s March on Washington\, in We Are Not Here to Be Bystanders Linda Sarsour offers a poignant story of community and family. \nFrom the Brooklyn bodega her father owned\, where Linda learned the real meaning of intersectionality\, to protests in the streets of Washington\, DC\, Linda’s experience as a daughter of Palestinian immigrants is a moving portrayal of what it means to find one’s voice and use it for the good of others. We follow Linda as she learns the tenets of successful community organizing\, and through decades of fighting for racial\, economic\, gender\, and social justice as she becomes one of the most recognized activists in the nation. We also see her honoring her grandmother’s dying wish\, protecting her children\, building resilient friendships\, and mentoring others even as she loses her first mentor in a tragic accident. Throughout\, she inspires readers to take action as she reaffirms that we are not here to be bystanders. \nIn his foreword to the book\, Harry Belafonte writes of Linda\, “While we may not have made it to the Promised Land\, my peers and I\, my brothers and sisters in liberation can rest easy that the future is in the hands of leaders like Linda Sarsour. I have often said to Linda that she embodies the principle and purpose of another great Muslim leader\, brother Malcolm X.” \n***Books will be available for purchase. SUMMARY:Author Talk: Ruha Benjamin & Dorothy Roberts "Race After Technology:Abolitionist Tools for the New Jim Code"
DESCRIPTION:Uncle Bobbie’s welcomes Ruha Benjamin\, in conversation with Dorothy Roberts\, to explore Race After Technology: Abolitionist Tools for the New Jim Code. \nFrom everyday apps to complex algorithms\, Ruha Benjamin cuts through tech-industry hype to understand how emerging technologies can reinforce White supremacy and deepen social inequity. \nBenjamin argues that automation\, far from being a sinister story of racist programmers scheming on the dark web\, has the potential to hide\, speed up\, and deepen discrimination while appearing neutral and even benevolent when compared to the racism of a previous era. Presenting the concept of the “New Jim Code\,” she shows how a range of discriminatory designs encode inequity by explicitly amplifying racial hierarchies; by ignoring but thereby replicating social divisions; or by aiming to fix racial bias but ultimately doing quite the opposite. Moreover\, she makes a compelling case for race itself as a kind of technology\, designed to stratify and sanctify social injustice in the architecture of everyday life. \nThis illuminating guide provides conceptual tools for decoding tech promises with sociologically informed skepticism. In doing so\, it challenges us to question not only the technologies we are sold but also the ones we ourselves manufacture. \nBooks will be available for purchase. Signing to follow the reading & discussion. \n“Race After Technology is a brilliant\, beautifully argued\, engagingly written\, and groundbreaking work. Ruha Benjamin is that rare scholar whose sophisticated understanding of science and technology is matched by her deep knowledge of race and racialization. Here she guides us into fresh terrain for understanding and tackling the persistence of racial inequality. This book should be read by everyone committed to creating a more just world.”

SUMMARY:Author Event: Margaret Kimberley Prejudential\, Black America & the Presidents
DESCRIPTION:Uncle Bobbie’s invites you to this author talk with Margaret Kimberley about her book Prejudential\, Black America and the Presidents. \n“This book is an effort to shed light on the truth. . . . To the extent that our leaders embody aspects of who we are as a people\, studying how each president has participated in our nation’s complicated and often shameful treatment of black people is as good a place as any to start.” — Margaret Kimberley from the Preface \nPREJUDENTIAL is a concise\, authoritative exploration of America’s relationship with race and black Americans through the lens of the presidents who have been elected to represent all of its people.\nThroughout the history of the United States\, numerous presidents have left their legacies as slaveholders\, bigots\, and inciters of racial violence\, but were the ones generally regarded as more sympathetic to the plight and interests of black Americans—such as Lincoln\, FDR\, and Clinton—really much better? And what of all the presidents whose relationship with black America is not even considered in the pages of most history books? Over the course of 45 chapters—one for each president—Margaret Kimberley enlightens and informs readers about the attitudes and actions of the highest elected official in the country. By casting sunlight on an aspect of American history that is largely overlooked\, Prejudential aims to increase awareness in a manner that will facilitate discussion and understanding. \n“Margaret Kimberley gives us an intellectual gem of prophetic fire about all the U.S. presidents and their deep roots in the vicious legacy of white supremacy and predatory capitalism. Such truths seem more than most Americans can bear\, though we ignore her words at our own peril!” — Cornel West\, author of Race Matters \nBooks will be available for purchase. Signing to follow the discussion.

SUMMARY:Author Event: The Toni Morrison Book Club at Uncle Bobbies
DESCRIPTION:Uncle Bobbies welcomes professors Juda Bennett\, Winnifred Brown-Glaude\, Cassandra Jackson\, and Piper Kendrix Williams to talk about their powerful collaborative book. \nIn this startling group memoir\, four friends—black and white\, gay and straight\, immigrant and American-born—use Toni Morrison’s novels as a springboard for intimate and revealing conversations about the problems of everyday racism and living whole in times of uncertainty. Tackling everything from first love and Soul Train to police brutality and the Black Lives Matter movement\, the authors take up what it means to read collaboratively and to learn in public as an act of individual reckoning and social resistance. \nThis brilliant confessional offers a radical vision for book groups as sites of self-discovery and communal healing. The Toni Morrison Book Club insists that we find ourselves in fiction and proposes Morrison as the preeminent spiritual guide to our most difficult thoughts and ideas about American life. \nBooks will be available for purchase. Signing to follow the reading & discussion.

He has spent the last decade working as a side-man\, experiencing new styles\, and studying with the masters. Now\, he has taken all he has learned and is applying it to his own group. Tracing the lineage of bebop into the contemporary\, his compositions celebrate the city and honor nature. He is also the host of the Voice = Power Podcast in which he interviews visionaries of the Jazz world\, pursuing the question: How does an artist find their voice? \nwebsite: nicholaskrolak.com\nInstagram: Nicholas Krolak\n—————————————\nDave Mattock\nAfter a long hiatus from the recording studio\, Dave Mattock returns in 2020 with the new album Funktap. Featuring all original material by Dave\, this recording is the culmination of many years of writing and performance with Dave’s Tap Room Band. Over the course of hundreds of performances\, the groups sound has evolved from its traditional 1960s jazz organ-trio roots into a unique style that incorporates the 90s jazz\, hip-hop and rock that Dave was raised in. Funktap is a direct descendent of other bass-less jazz groups of the past twenty years\, reminiscent of Joshua Redman’s Elastic Band\, Chris Potter’s Underground\, and Soulive. Intricate melodies\, complex rhythms\, and intelligent improvisation meld seamlessly with groove and emotion to create a perfect balance in Dave’s compositions. This is music that will keep the mind occupied and the body moving. Featuring Jason Herrmann on guitar and Josh Orlando on drums. \nwww.davemattock.com\nwww.taproomband.com\n————————————-\nTammy Huynh \nTammy Huynh is a Vietnamese American vocalist and composer that aspires to write music that unites her unique\, diverse personal and musical experiences into compelling narratives. She holds the importance of storytelling as paramount and strives to write music that is intelligent\, approachable\, and empathetic. Huynh received her B.M. in Jazz Studies\, Vocal Performance from Temple University’s Honors College. She was initially accepted as a classical piano major but found herself more involved in and drawn to jazz. She had the privilege to study under noted jazz vocalist Sachal Vasandani and later\, Sara Serpa. In 2019\, Huynh was accepted to participate in the prestigious Banff Centre Jazz and Creative Music Program\, led by Vijay Iyer and Tyshawn Sorrey. \nBorn out of her frustration from being a 20-something\, naturally\, she started a band. For better or worse\, MỸ TÂM (pronounced “mee-thum”) is an indie pop band that combines jazz with new wave sensibilities. Each composition strives to reflect on the challenges of being a young woman and explores how to face these challenges with dignity. The band will be recording their first live album this upcoming Spring. \nsunflowerintheeast.com\ninstagram: MỸ TÂM\nfacebook: MỸ TÂM\n————————————— \nNeil Podgurski \nNeil Podgurski is a pianist and composer\, and he began picking out familiar melodies on the piano by ear at age 3. Muhsana is a multi-talented artist who is skilled in painting\, drawing and printmaking\, but whose work covers a broad spectrum of mediums ranging from videography\, photography\, sculptural installation as well as large-scale murals and mosaics. Muhsana’s work is defined by her interest in the holistic evolution of human consciousness. Muhsana’s work has been primarily community-centered since her 1999 two-year exhibition project\, Portes et Passages du Retour\, which took place in an abandoned building assisted by a gang of homeless teens in Abidjan\, Côte d’Ivoire. Her vision grew in 2004 when\, accompanied by artist Amadou Kane Sy\, she co-founded a rural Center for Art and Holistic Development through their Senegal-based association\, Portes et Passage du Retour. Muhsana’s work has been exhibited internationally and her community-driven projects have been conducted throughout the U.S. and Africa both individually as well as in collaboration with artist\, Amadou Kane Sy. Muhsana is a recipient of numerous awards and honors including a Fulbright Fellowship and a Pew Fellowship in the Arts.\n\nValerie Anderson is a group facilitator\, arts advocate\, and social justice educator. SUMMARY:Reception:Barbara Bullock in Africa in the Arts of Philadelphia Exhibit at the Woodmere
DESCRIPTION:Africa in the Arts of Philadelphia: Bullock\, Searles\, and Twins Seven-Seven\n02/08/2020-\n05/17/2020\n\nSusanna W. Gold\, Ph.D.\, Guest Curator\nAfrica in the Arts of Philadelphia brings together the work of visual artists Barbara Bullock (born 1938)\, Charles Searles (1937–2004)\, and Twins Seven-Seven (1944–2011)\, exploring their collaborative cross-fertilization of ideas and assertions of African and African American cultural identity. These artists participated in the activities of the Ile-Ife Black Humanitarian Center in North Philadelphia. Conceived and established in 1969 by dancer and choreographer Arthur Hall (1934–2000)\, Ile-Ife offered visual arts\, performance\, and musical arts classes and programs for the Philadelphia community. The center’s goals focused on educating audiences in traditional African culture and aesthetics and infusing African and African-inspired art forms into contemporary Philadelphia experience. \nIle-Ife derives its name from the ancient Yoruba city of Ife\, held to be the site of the world’s creation\, according to Yoruba mythology. Ile-Ife was Philadelphia’s primary conduit for sharing and celebrating the great traditions of Africa in building community through a shared sense of strength and pride. Bullock and Searles formed Ile-Ife’s art department\, while Twins Seven-Seven introduced authentic Yoruba culture and aesthetics into its activities. Africa in the Arts of Philadelphia examines the work of these artists and their formative experiences at Ile-Ife\, which expanded their understanding of the richness of African traditions. \nExhibition-related Events\n02.08.2020 | Open House Reception | 2-4pm\n02.22| Lecture: Prince Twins Seven-Seven\, Life and Art | 3pm\n03.07 | In Conversation: Susanna W. SUMMARY:Author Event: John Sayles & Yellow Earth at Uncle Bobbies
DESCRIPTION:Rich layers of shale oil are discovered under Yellow Earth\, North Dakota and the neighboring Three Nations Indian reservation. All hell breaks loose. \nIn Yellow Earth\, the site of Three Nations reservations on the banks of the Missouri River in North Dakota\, Sayles introduces us to Harleigh Killdeer\, chairman of the Tribal Business Council. “An activist in his way\, a product of the Casino Era\,” Kildeer\, who is contracted by oil firm Case and Crosby\, spearheads the new Three Nations Petroleum Company. \nWhat follows\, with characteristic lyrical dexterity\, insight\, and wit\, introduces us to a memorable cast of characters\, weaving together narratives of competing worlds through masterful storytelling. \nSet shortly before Standing Rock would become a symbol of historic proportions of the brutal confrontation between native resistance and the forces of big business and law enforcement\, the fate of Yellow Earth serves as a parable for our times. \nBooks will be available for purchase. Signing will follow the discussion.
