SUMMARY:Musicians Gathering #35 at Rittenhouse Soundworks
DESCRIPTION:Musicians Gathering #35 \nSunday\, February 17\, 2019\n219 W Rittenhouse St\nGermantown \n$10 at the door Free Parking at the lot next door \nThe Carryons\nare a Mediterranean Folk Jazz trio based in Philadelphia\, PA. They play original music that bears the influence of their Greek\, Turkish\, and American upbringing and blends the sounds\, rhythms\, and harmonies of east and west. While only a few years old as a band\, members Ozzie\, Timothy\, and Christian have played for many years in a variety of musical styles and contexts in the US and Europe. Their goal with this group is to continue creating and playing their own blend of world music for people that enjoy something slightly east of normal.\nfacebook.com/thecarryonsband\ninstagram.com/thecarryons \nThree Strands i\ns a folk/Americana project that was started by\nLancaster\, PA\, based singer/songwriter\, Sean Cox\, in the winter of 2016. \nAfter a five year period fronting the Philadelphia\, PA\, based folk/rock quintet\, The Band of Rivals\, Sean began working on a small collection of the more narrative\, delicate songs that would bring Three Strands to fruition. Through honest and simplistic arrangements and strong influences from the American folk revival\, as well as\, early gospel and blues traditions\, Three Strands exists to search for the things that unite us all.. \nwww.facebook.com/threestrandsmusic\nwww.threestrandsmusic.com \nVoyage i\ns the creative collaboration of Alex Laurenzi\, Maya Keren\, Gus Allen\, and Maya Stepansky\, all musicians who met in the jazz program at Princeton University. Individually\, they each bring impressive and wide-ranging musical backgrounds and performance experience to the band. Collectively\, their paths of study encompass many disciplines and diverse musical influences and styles\, forging a common bond in their shared passion for innovative music-making. The members of Voyage have been recognized by artistic foundations such as YoungArts\, Grammy Jazz\, DownBeat\, and the Brubeck Institute for their musicianship. As new friends\, they are excited and grateful to be on this journey together and bring their music to audiences everywhere. \nThe Paul Giess Group\nwas formed in the Spring of 2014 with the release of Paul’s Debut Album U Suite U. Since then the group has played around this city in venues including the Community Education Center in West Philadelphia\, the Uptown! Knauer Performing Arts Center\, Vesper and Ortleibs. The group plays original compositions and arrangements with influences from Keith Jarret to Eddie Harris. Paul is always interested in how to convey spirituality through music and looks forward to presenting original arrangements of a variety of hymn tunes. Having spent 2 years in Louisiana the New Orleans sound has also become part of Paul’s musical vocabulary and he looks forward to bringing a piece of the Big Easy to the City of Brotherly Love. \nwww.paulgiessmusic.com\nhttps://www.facebook.com/paulgiessmusic/ \n  \n

SUMMARY:Author Talk: Sherry DeCarava The Sweet Flypaper of Life
DESCRIPTION:Uncle Bobbie’s welcomes Sherry DeCarava\, wife of the late Roger DeCarava for a book talk and discussion of the newly republished The Sweet Flypaper of Life. \n“In 1952 Roger DeCarava became the first African American photographer to win a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Fellowship. The one-year grant enabled DeCarava to focus full time on the photography he had been creating since the mid-1940s and to complete a project that would eventually result in The Sweet Flypaper of Life\, a moving\, photo-poetic work in the urban setting of Harlem. DeCarava compiled a set of images from which Hughes chose 141 and adeptly supplied a fictive narration\, reflecting on life in that city-within-a-city. First published in 1955\, the book\, widely considered a classic of photographic visual literature\, was reprinted by public demand several times. This fourth printing\, the Heritage Edition\, is the first authorized English-language edition since 1983 and includes an afterword by Sherry Turner DeCarava tracing the history and ongoing importance of this book.”
