SUMMARY:The Destination is the Downbeat at Rittenhouse Soundworks
DESCRIPTION:The Destination is the Downbeat is a new concert work that considers the notion of ‘keeping time’ in jazz music. TAKE IT AWAY DANCE! \nTime is a feeling; it is swing\, groove and rhythmic feel – the essence of tap dancing itself. For tap dancers\, how they play time in jazz music has everything to do with who they are as musicians and as human beings. Rhythm is intimately personal and music is the original DM (direct message). Pamela Hetherington’s choreography explores the theme of keeping time across different types of jazz music\, including blues\, hard bop\, free and post-bop. One new work will explore the music of legendary Philadelphia jazz musician\, Bobby Timmons. The concert also leaps into the music of Oscar Peterson\, Thelonious Monk\, Christian McBride\, Miles Davis and original compositions by Nicholas Krolak and Erica Mack. \nPerforming in the sweeping industrial space at Rittenhouse Soundworks\, on the only tap performance floor in the city\, five musicians and seven dancers deliver a deeply connected performance that fuses physicality and musicality. The musical accompaniment is provided by piano-vocalist\, Erica Corbo\, (who is also the music director)\, saxophonist\, Jonathan Katz; bassist\, Nicholas Krolak\, drummer\, Erica Mack\, and vocalist\, V. Shayne Frederick. Along with the musicians\, there are seven tap dancers working in concert: Lauren Belasco\, Alec Chupik\, Rosie Marinelli\, Khalil Munir\, Morgan O’Shea\, Kristin Potocki\, and Vanetta Wood. \n+Artistic direction and choreography: Pamela Hetherington\n+Two shows: 5:30 and 8 pm\n+Concert runs 75 minutes with no intermission \n***\nTake It Away Dance maintains the connection of music and dance. We are a tap dance and live music company. Our work is inspired by diverse jazz music influences with a distinctive focus on the music and grooves that originated here in Philadelphia. Take It Away Dance has been presented by Jazz Bridge (Neighborhood Concert)\, The Philadelphia Jazz Project (7X7 Series)\, Reading Terminal Market (Music at the Market Series)\, Creative Philadelphia (Culture in the Courtyard)\, Dixon Place (30-30-30\, Eight in Show)\, The Barnes Foundation (Free First Sunday)\, The Outlet Dance Project\, the Allentown Art Museum (Third Thursday)\, and Symphony Space (Stam-Pede/APAP). Commercially \, Take It Away Dance has been contracted for Philadelphia appearances by The Fillmore and SEPTA. The company creates new tap repertory works each year\, and they have presented five\, evening-length original concerts since 2014. They have also presented the work of world-renowned women tap dance choreographers through the re-staging and performance of their classic works. Take It Away Dance has been featured on the nationally-syndicated arts program\, Articulate\, has been directed by Pamela Hetherington since 2014.

SUMMARY:G-town's Sun Ra Arkestra & Sounds of Liberation at Union Transfer
DESCRIPTION:Ars Nova Workshop Presents\n\n\nThe Marshall Allen 95th Birthday Celebration\n\n\nSun Ra Arkestra\, Sounds Of Liberation\, Eli Keszler\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThursday\, June 13\n Show | 8pm // Doors | 7pm \n $20 to $100\n\n\n\n\n\nVIP Tickets Available\nRSVP on Facebook\n\n\n\nSun Ra Arkestra\n \nThe Sun Ra Arkestra has been hailed as one of the greatest big bands of all time\, and their maestro Marshall Allen will be celebrating his 95th birthday this year! In celebration\, Ars Nova Workshop is presenting the Arkestra on a double-bill with another legendary Philadelphia collective\, Sounds of Liberation. \nThough the iconic Sun Ra left the planet in 1993\, his cosmic legacy is proudly maintained by the interstellar sounds of the Arkestra\, which now operates under the direction of alto saxophonist Marshall Allen. With a massive\, joyous songbook and the kind of well-organized chaos that sees their legendary two-hour sets move deftly between rolling grooves\, sing-along chants\, and atonal blasts of mischievous brass\, the Arkestra remain one of the most unmissable live acts today. In 2018\, the 83rd Downbeat Readers Poll saw the Arkestra ranked eighth in the “Big Band” category. In the last year alone\, the Arkestra has backed Solange and U2\, inspired Lady Gaga to include “Rocket Number Nine” as part of her stage show\, and welcomed artists like Kamasi Washington and Shabaka Hutchings to join in the fun\, opening up the ears of new music audiences globally to a challenging and uniquely defined sound. \nAs a young musician\, Marshall Belford Allen (b. May 25\, 1924) performed with pianist Art Simmons\, Don Byas\, and James Moody before enrolling in the Paris Conservatory of Music. After relocating to Chicago\, Allen became a pupil of Sun Ra\, subsequently joining the Arkestra in 1958 and leading Sun Ra’s formidable reed section for the next 40 years. Marshall\, along with John Gilmore\, June Tyson\, and James Jacson\, lived\, rehearsed\, toured\, and recorded with Sun Ra almost exclusively for much of Sun Ra’s musical career. His membership in the Arkestra makes Allen a pioneer of the Free Jazz movement of the early 1960s\, having remarkable influence on the leading voices in the avant-garde. He is featured on over 200 Sun Ra recordings\, in addition to collaborations with Phish\, Sonic Youth\, Digable Planets\, and Medeski\, Martin & Wood. Allen assumed the position of maestro in 1995\, following the ascension of Sun Ra in 1993 and John Gilmore in 1995. Marshall continues to be committed to the study\, research\, and development of Sun Ra’s musical precepts and has launched the Sun Ra Arkestra into a dimension beyond that of mere “ghost” band by writing fresh arrangements of Sun Ra’s music\, as well as composing new music and arrangements for the Arkestra. He works unceasingly to keep the big-band tradition alive. \n\nSounds Of Liberation\n\nSounds of Liberation was a self-described “community force” that sprang from Philadelphia’s Germantown and Mt. Airy neighborhoods in the early 1970s\, then seemingly vanished into the ether by decade’s end. At times reminiscent of the Modern Jazz Quartet and Elevation-era Pharaoh Sanders\, SoL’s singular blend of free-funk\, fiery spiritual jazz\, and Afro-Cuban rhythms placed them at the forefront of the Black Avant Garde. SoL’s only documented recording\, a self-titled LP released on the group’s own Dogtown label in 1972\, was a mythical score for free jazz vinyl collectors until Porter Records’ Luke Mosling reissued it “sound unheard” 38 years later.

SUMMARY:O BEAUTIFUL FOR...AN UNFINISHED SONG ABOUT AMERICA at Cliveden
DESCRIPTION:O BEAUTIFUL FOR…AN UNFINISHED SONG ABOUT AMERICA\nOn Saturday\, May 25th\, let your voice be heard by adding new verses to the song\, ‘America the Beautiful.’ From 10 AM to 12 PM\, local author and artist Lucy Bell Jarka-Sellers will guide visitors in a workshop to discuss their feelings on what makes America beautiful\, what is flawed about our country\, and what we aspire to as a nation. Participants will then transform their feelings into new lyrics for ‘America the Beautiful’ and finish by singing both old and new lyrics as a group. \nThe workshop will be held in Cliveden’s Carriage House\, located on 98 E. Cliveden Street\, 19144\, and is wheelchair accessible. Street parking is available in the surrounding neighborhood. \nTickets are $8 and on sale now. Space is limited\, advanced purchase is required. \n——————-About Lucy Bell Jarka-Sellers\nLucy Bell Jarka-Sellers is a local author\, artist\, and former teacher at Germantown Friends School. \nAbout ‘America the Beautiful’\nAmerica the Beautiful is a song of celebration and aspiration. It acknowledges that America has flaws that need to be mended\, but insists that America is both up to the challenge and worth cherishing. By writing new verses for the old song and singing them together we reaffirm our dedication to what’s beautiful about America and our commitment to mending what’s flawed\, while promoting brotherhood (and sisterhood) from sea to shining sea! Singing about what we care about lifts us up and binds us together. It can help us to protect what’s best about our country\, to see where we’ve gone astray\, and to keep walking toward a more just society.
