SUMMARY:Author Event: Keeanga-Yamahtta Taylor - Race for Profit
DESCRIPTION:Author Event: Keeanga-Yamahtta Taylor – Race for Profit\n\nSat Oct 26th 5:00pm – 6:30pm\n\n\n\nFirst United Methodist Church of Germantown FUMCOG\, 6001 Germantown Ave\, Philadelphia\, PA 19144\, USA map \n\n\n\n\n\nUncle Bobbie’s Welcomes author and professor Keeanga-Yamahtta Taylor for her new book “Race for Profit” \nAbout the book: \nRace for Profit uncovers how exploitative real estate practices continued well after housing discrimination was banned. The same racist structures and individuals remained intact after redlining’s end\, and close relationships between regulators and the industry created incentives to ignore improprieties. Meanwhile\, new policies meant to encourage low-income homeownership created new methods to exploit Black homeowners. The federal government guaranteed urban mortgages in an attempt to overcome resistance to lending to Black buyers – as if unprofitability\, rather than racism\, was the cause of housing segregation. Bankers\, investors\, and real estate agents took advantage of the perverse incentives\, targeting the Black women most likely to fail to keep up their home payments and slip into foreclosure\, multiplying their profits. As a result\, by the end of the 1970s\, the nation’s first programs to encourage Black homeownership ended with tens of thousands of foreclosures in Black communities across the country. The push to uplift Black homeownership had descended into a goldmine for realtors and mortgage lenders\, and a ready-made cudgel for the champions of deregulation to wield against government intervention of any kind.

SUMMARY:Musicians Gathering #41 at Rittenhouse Soundworks
DESCRIPTION:Tickets $10 at the door\nFree Parking at the lot next door\n_________________________________________ \nSharon Sable and E. Shawn Qaissaunee \nThe music of Sharon Sable and E. Shawn Qaissaunee is something to be experienced. Together they create a beautiful soundscape that is both bold and understated\, appealing to music lovers of all kinds. The musical paths that have brought them together are rich and varied and weave elements of jazz\, world\, pop and much more into their memorable and engaging performances. All of this is delivered with a strong sense of humor\, humility and respect for their craft. \nwww.sharonsable.com\nwww.esqmusic.com\n_____________________________________________\nTrap Rabbbit \n“A couple years back\, renowned jazz trumpeter Christian Scott introduced the concept of ‘stretch music’ in his album of the same name. The idea was one not of total re-invention or boundary-smashing\, but rather of taking one’s creative vocabulary and stretching it to include as much style and range as possible\, incorporating uncommon influences while remaining true to one’s musical roots. \nPhilly duo Trap Rabbit could easily qualify as stretch music… though they might prefer their own category of “weirdo beat rock.” Indeed\, Arjun Dube’s complex drumbeats are prominently present in the band’s work\, propping up and goading on Logan Roth’s expressionistic keyboard playing. It’s rooted in freewheeling jazz improvisation\, but also lively hip-hop energy; sleek and suave disco grooves\, and also laid-back funk. In the spirit of Medeski\, Martin and Wood and Badbadnotgood\, Trap Rabbit delivers raw and explosive instrumentals that hit a spectrum of stylistic touch points… “ — John Vettese\, WXPN’s The Key \nIn their 3 years as a band\, Trap Rabbit has garnered a fervent local following and continues to branch out with continued touring dates. Some of the group’s higher profile shows include openings slots for luminaries such as Taylor McFerrin\, Mark Guiliana\, and DJ Logic. In addition to creating original content\, the duo regularly works as producers and session musicians with artists throughout the east coast. Their newest 2019 release\, “Songs About Worms\,” was produced at Hour Glass Recordings in Philadelphia\, and is available now on CD and all streaming platforms. \n———————————— \nwebsite: www.traprabbit.com\ninstagram: @traprabbitmusic\nfb: https://www.facebook.com/traprabbitmusic \n_________________________________________________ \nAdriana Samargia and Robert Prester \nAdriana Samargia is an American singer best known for her ageless sound\, instrumental approach and vocally acrobatic treatment of jazz and Brazilian standards\, sacred works and Great American Songbook classics. Her talents have spread to cartoon\, television and radio through recorded roles and jingles – even voices inside of toys. Her current projects involve; a Cole Porter review\, “Burning Cole\,” a compilation of spirituals and classical sacred pieces entitled “Sounds of The Good Shepherd\,” a collection of newly arranged pop favorites from the 70’s-90’s labeled “Our Way”\, a sampling of jazz and Brazilian classics entitled “Double Standards\,” a Golden Era Broadway Musical review “From the Theater District” and lastly “First Snow” – a Wintersongs-Christmas collection. \nRobert Prester is an American concert and jazz pianist\, best known for his virtuosic and articulate approach to both classical and jazz idioms\, effortless improvisatory agility\, and innovative approach to stylizing jazz standards and Great American Songbook repertoire. His music has been documented on CD’s of his original compositions\, and is heard on commercial recordings\, live classical and jazz performances\, and college performance lectures. His most recent recording\, Rapsodya\, features his original Piano Sonata in F Minor\, as well as a collection of classical works by Beethoven\, Bach\, Chopin\, and Debussy. Dogtown is the latest recording of his jazz and Latin jazz compositions\, and achieved heavy rotation radio air-play and #16 on the jazz charts. \n_________________________________________________ \nMike Lorenz and the Witherbees \nMike Lorenz & the Witherbees are a Philadelphia-area folk jazz band. Having released their first LP of new original music and folksy covers in the summer of 2019 to positive reviews\, the group continues to develop their sound and reach. \nMike Lorenz & the Witherbees\, led by guitarist Mike Lorenz\, feature up-and-coming vocalist\, violist\, & songwriter Jacqui Armbruster\, bassist Justin Sekelewski and drummer Zach Martin. Imagine Norah Jones accompanied by Bill Frisell on the set of a David Lynch movie and the sound of the band starts to come into focus\, a sound defined by the ever-evolving dialogue between Jacqui’s voice and Mike’s guitar. \nThe band’s repertoire embodies a 21st Century Songbook\napproach to making music. \nwww.mikelorenzmusic.com/mike-lorenz-and-the-wirherbees \nInstagram: mikelorenzmusic\nFacebook: mikelorenzmusic

SUMMARY:YA author Kwame Mbalia at Uncle Bobbies
DESCRIPTION:Join author Kwame Mbalia in a discussion about this exciting new release “Tristan Strong Punches a Hole in the Sky” — fans of The Lightning Thief and Children of Blood and Bone are sure to enjoy. Books will be available for purchase. Author signing will follow. \nAbout the book:\nChicago seventh grader Tristan Strong travels to Alke\, where African American folk characters are gods. \nTristan has just lost his first boxing match. It’s unsurprising\, given he’s mourning the death of his best friend\, Eddie\, and struggling with accompanying survivor guilt\, but unacceptable for someone from a boxing family. On the ride to summer exile with his grandparents in the Alabama countryside\, Tristan begins reading Eddie’s story journal. Somehow\, the journal allows Tristan to see folk heroes John Henry and Brer Rabbit sending an unseen someone off on a mission. That night\, Gum Baby (a hoot and a half—easily the funniest character in the book)\, from the Anansi story\, steals Eddie’s journal. Needless to say\, things go awry: A hole is ripped in the sky of Alke\, and Tristan (but not only Tristan) falls in. The people of Alke are suffering\, but grieving\, reluctant hero Tristan’s unwilling to jump right in to help those in need\, even when it becomes clear that he’s partly responsible\, making him both imperfect and realistic. Mbalia’s African American and West African gods (with villains tied to U.S. chattel slavery and the Middle Passage specifically) touch on the tensions between the cultures\, a cultural nuance oft overlooked. Readers who want more than just a taste of Alke will be eager for future books. Most human characters\, like Tristan\, are black with brown skin. \nA worthy addition to the diverse array of offerings from Rick Riordan Presents. (Fantasy. 10-14)

SUMMARY:Author Event at Uncle Bobbies: New Kings of the World-Fatima Bhutto
DESCRIPTION:Author Event: New Kings of the World\n\nSat Sep 28th 2:00pm – 4:00pm\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nUncle Bobbie’s welcomes author Fatima Bhutto for a book talk and signing of New Kings of the World: Dispatches from Bollywood\, Dizi\, and K-Pop. Admission is FREE and books will be available for purchase. \nAbout the book: There is a vast cultural movement emerging from beyond the Western world. Truly global in its range and allure\, it is the biggest challenge yet to Hollywood\, McDonald’s\, and blue jeans. This is a book about these new arbiters of mass culture arising from the East—India’s Bollywood films\, Turkish soap opera\, or dizi\, and South Korean pop music. Carefully packaging not always secular modernity with traditional values in urbanized settings\, they have created a new global pop culture that can be easily consumed\, especially by the many millions coming late to the modern world and still negotiating its overwhelming challenges. \nAbout the author: Fatima Bhutto was born in Kabul\, Afghanistan and grew up between Syria and Pakistan. She is the author of five previous books of fiction and nonfiction. Her debut novel\, The Shadow of the Crescent Moon\, was long listed for the Bailey’s Women’s Prize for Fiction and the memoir about her father’s life and assassination\,Songs of Blood and Sword\, was published to acclaim. Her most recent book isThe Runaways\, a novel.

SUMMARY:Author Event at Uncle Bobbies: Black Card-Christ L. Terry
DESCRIPTION:Author Event: Black Card – Chris L. Terry\n\nThu Sep 26th 7:00pm – 8:30pm\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nUncle Bobbies welcome author Chris L. Terry for a book talk and signing of their book Black Card. \nAbout the Book: Chris L. Terry’s Black Card is an uncompromising examination of American identity. In an effort to be “black enough\,” a mixed-race punk rock musician indulges his own stereotypical views of African American life by doing what his white bandmates call “black stuff.” After remaining silent during a racist incident\, the unnamed narrator has his Black Card revoked by Lucius\, his guide through Richmond\, Virginia\, where Confederate flags and memorials are a part of everyday life. \nDetermined to win back his Black Card\, the narrator sings rap songs at an all-white country music karaoke night\, absorbs black pop culture\, and attempts to date his black coworker Mona\, who is attacked one night. The narrator becomes the prime suspect and earns the attention of John Donahue\, a local police officer with a grudge dating back to high school. Forced to face his past\, his relationships with his black father and white mother\, and the real consequences and dangers of being black in America\, the narrator must choose who he is before the world decides for him.
