He accompanies his singing on guitar\, but is perhaps best-known as a harmonica player\, having worked and recorded with such artists as Steve Goodman\, Loudon Wainwright\, Jim Ringer\, Utah Phillips\, Mick Moloney\, Jim Dragoni\, and numerous others(he’s recorded on over 25 albums). He has his own album\, “Travels With Broudy”\, and has recorded “In Country: Folk Songs of Americans in the Vietnam War” (Flying Fish) with six fellow Vietnam veterans.\nSaul’s music covers a wide range of grassroots American genres\, from traditional ballads to bluegrass\, country\, blues\, Cajun\, and rockabilly. DESCRIPTION:VIOLIN WOMAN\, AFRICAN DREAMS \n\n\n\nNovember 15-24\, 2019 | Performances at 8:00pm on Fridays and Saturdays\, 3:00pm on Sundays\nComposer and violinist Diane Monroe draws on her decades-long\, genre-defying career to craft a musical memoir that bridges jazz\, classical and traditional African music\, revealing an African-American violinist’s trials and triumphs. This story of personal and collective histories will be told through a collage of original music\, visual art and spoken word. The evening-length suite will be performed by an ensemble that includes violin\, banjo\, west African kora and Western String quartet. \nWith musical boundaries lessening\, artists are ever-more challenged to define our own identities and voices. With this work I am challenging myself to not only disrupt musical classifications and hierarchies\, but also to examine what it means for me to be an African-American woman.\nFor this new piece\, Monroe has worked with visual artist and scholar Curlee Raven Holton\, drawing inspiration from his paintings and prints\, using that inspiration to reflect on her life journey and to write music fueled by her experience as an African-American woman—Monroe employs a quintessentially Western instrument to collapse boundaries between musical styles that often occupy distinct silos. Holton’s artwork will be incorporated into the scenic design for the premiere performances at Cliveden. \nMonroe’s other collaborators on the project include renowned string quartet PubliQuartet\, internationally recognized master of West African kora and storytelling Yacouba Sissoko\, and Ayodele Maakheru\, who has played banjo\, guitar\, and multiple other stringed instruments on Broadway and across the world for over three decades. A rhythm section composed of bassist Lee Smith\, hand percussionist Leonard “Doc” Gibbs and drummer Harry “Butch” Reed completes the eclectic ensemble. \nPerformances will run 85 minutes with a 15-minute intermission. \nViolin Woman\, African Dreams has been supported by The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage.\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDiane Monroe \n\nDiane Monroe is a violinist whose versatility and expressive artistry consistently brings audiences to their feet. These critically acclaimed groups have appeared on The Cosby Show\, CBS News Sunday Morning and Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood. Monroe is more\, however\, than simply a fine performer. Her original compositions and arrangements have been highlighted on TV shows and in performances with the two ensembles at major concert halls and festivals throughout the world. Monroe has also been leading her own ensembles for more than 15 years. The Diane Monroe Quartet appeared at the Kennedy Center’s Mary Lou Williams Women in Jazz Festival and continues to play at venues across the country. \nMonroe is a Philadelphia native and graduate of the Curtis Institute of Music and University of the Arts. She has taught at Oberlin Conservatory of Music\, Swarthmore College\, Lehigh University and Temple University. But our future president wasn’t alone. While millions of Americans suffered financial loss\, tycoons pounced to heartlessly seize thousands of homes—their profiteering made even easier because\, as prize-winning investigative reporter Aaron Glantz reveals in Homewreckers\, they often used taxpayer money—and the Obama administration’s promise to cover their losses. \nIn Homewreckers\, Glantz recounts the transformation of straightforward lending into a morass of slivered and combined mortgage “products” that could be bought and sold\, accompanied by a shift in priorities and a loosening of regulations and laws that made it good business to lend money to those who wouldn’t be able to repay. SUMMARY:Tablet Bag Weaving Class at Awbury Arboretum
DESCRIPTION:Tablet Bag Weaving Class\n\n\nNovember 10\n1:00 – 4:00 pm\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWeave a fun and funky bag for your tablet or iPad\, or even make a wine bottle bag using a simple rigid heddle loom (a.k.a. “knitters loom”).  Students can use “plarn” (yarn made from plastic bag strips) or fabric strips from new or recycled fabric.  Ages 15 and up. Class limited to 6 students. $25\, includes loom rental fee and pre-warped loom. This class will be held at the Francis Cope House.\nThe class is taught by members of the Philadelphia Guild of Handweavers.  PGHW is a non-profit organization whose mission is to foster the art and craft of weaving and the fiber arts. PGHW is located in the Manayunk section of Philadelphia. The same racist structures and individuals remained intact after redlining’s end\, and close relationships between regulators and the industry created incentives to ignore improprieties. Meanwhile\, new policies meant to encourage low-income homeownership created new methods to exploit Black homeowners. The federal government guaranteed urban mortgages in an attempt to overcome resistance to lending to Black buyers – as if unprofitability\, rather than racism\, was the cause of housing segregation. Bankers\, investors\, and real estate agents took advantage of the perverse incentives\, targeting the Black women most likely to fail to keep up their home payments and slip into foreclosure\, multiplying their profits. As a result\, by the end of the 1970s\, the nation’s first programs to encourage Black homeownership ended with tens of thousands of foreclosures in Black communities across the country. The push to uplift Black homeownership had descended into a goldmine for realtors and mortgage lenders\, and a ready-made cudgel for the champions of deregulation to wield against government intervention of any kind.

Author signing will follow. \nAbout the book:\nChicago seventh grader Tristan Strong travels to Alke\, where African American folk characters are gods. \nTristan has just lost his first boxing match. It’s unsurprising\, given he’s mourning the death of his best friend\, Eddie\, and struggling with accompanying survivor guilt\, but unacceptable for someone from a boxing family. On the ride to summer exile with his grandparents in the Alabama countryside\, Tristan begins reading Eddie’s story journal. Somehow\, the journal allows Tristan to see folk heroes John Henry and Brer Rabbit sending an unseen someone off on a mission. That night\, Gum Baby (a hoot and a half—easily the funniest character in the book)\, from the Anansi story\, steals Eddie’s journal. Needless to say\, things go awry: A hole is ripped in the sky of Alke\, and Tristan (but not only Tristan) falls in. The people of Alke are suffering\, but grieving\, reluctant hero Tristan’s unwilling to jump right in to help those in need\, even when it becomes clear that he’s partly responsible\, making him both imperfect and realistic. Mbalia’s African American and West African gods (with villains tied to U.S. chattel slavery and the Middle Passage specifically) touch on the tensions between the cultures\, a cultural nuance oft overlooked. Readers who want more than just a taste of Alke will be eager for future books. Most human characters\, like Tristan\, are black with brown skin. \nA worthy addition to the diverse array of offerings from Rick Riordan Presents. (Fantasy. 10-14)
